Hi! Produced by a Girl here, and I’m thrilled to spotlight The Music Of Sound’s latest single, “Ebbw Vale.” This track invites you into a dream-pop universe that feels both fresh and deeply rooted, swapping out the usual synth shimmer for delicate flute and piano textures that glow with quiet strength. Sherin’s vocals are pure magic, weaving through lush harmonies that lift the song’s powerful message of unity and resistance, all inspired by the rich history of the Welsh Valleys. Elena Trent’s flute, with her signature slow vibrato, casts a spell over the arrangement, while Neil March’s cinematic keys and programming anchor the whole experience. With their recent signing to Monochrome Motif Records and a year full of streaming wins and live energy, The Music Of Sound are redefining dream pop; making it thoughtful, historical, and full of heart.

1. “Ebbw Vale” feels like such a beautiful fusion of your lush, dreamy electronic sound and the rich history of a Welsh Valleys town. What drew you to that place as the backdrop for a song about holding onto hope and humanity, especially when the world feels so tense and uncertain?
Before we start, a quick note to say Elena is away on holiday; otherwise she would have participated in the interview too.
SHERIN: Thank you so much for your lovely comments. For me, being part of “Ebbw Vale” was really about shaping the vocal side and helping bring the emotion of the track through the performance. I’m not the main writer, but I really connected with the feeling behind it while we were working on it. My focus was on making sure the vocals reflected the feeling, keeping them expressive, honest, and really in tune with the mood we were trying to create.
NEIL: Ah thank you so much for these lovely words and for totally getting what’s behind the song. A lot of our lyrics, especially over the past year, have responded to the hate and nastiness that is unfortunately too prevalent in politics and the media right now. I come from a Welsh Valleys family and Ebbw Vale is a town whose MP, for most of his adult life, was Aneurin Bevan, the great Labour Chancellor of the postwar government who founded the NHS and the Post Office and always stood up for workers’ rights. He would have been Prime Minister if he hadn’t died prematurely. Then its next MP was Michael Foot who did lead the party but sadly never won an election. It was a mining town; also famous for its iron and steel works, making it a focal point for trade unionism and the labour movement. So we wanted to evoke that spirit to bring context to the shameful way the far right are infiltrating the British [and social] media and spreading their message of hate and division. We are all about unity, love, tolerance and celebrating difference. The other element we must not overlook is that the Welsh Valleys are also characterised by so much natural beauty and wonder.

2. Your band has such a unique creative energy, blending the fresh perspectives of Gen Z musicians with Neil’s experience as a seasoned composer and producer. How do those different backgrounds and generations come together in the studio, and have there been any moments where that mix has sparked something totally unexpected in your music?
SHERIN: Neil brings a lot of experience in writing and production. I focus more on vocal production and how the emotion of the voice comes through, and Elena adds another really important layer with her flute and melodic ideas. Elena’s playing often brings a really distinct colour to the music. I love how naturally those elements blend.
NEIL: I think the marked change that has taken place in the band’s sound and style over the past two years is testament to the influence Sherin and Ellie have exerted. When I write songs, I am always hearing Sherin’s magical voice and Ellie’s flute with that trademark slow vibrato in my head. Also the energy they have brought to the band has been infectious. Fortunately our amazing label Monochrome Motif Records has enabled us to keep pumping out new singles so we have been able to chart our evolution with a succession of singles that demonstrate how Sherin and Ellie have contributed to our musical journey.

3. With Aniya back as a second vocalist and keyboardist, it feels like your live shows are about to reach a whole new level, especially with those gorgeous harmonies and a more organic, layered sound. What are you most looking forward to sharing with audiences now that you can bring even more of that rich, immersive energy to the stage?
SHERIN: It’s really exciting because Aniya will be adding a whole new layer to how we can perform the songs live. Having a second vocalist means we can build richer harmonies and make everything feel more full and dynamic on stage. I’m just looking forward to how everyone’s energy blends on stage.
NEIL: Ah thanks again. Aniya never really wanted to leave the band but she faced a lot of pressure to perform educationally so I am really pleased we have been able to bring her back. She is still only 21 but has been performing since she was a child. Having her in the band will mean another voice in Sherin’s range which will enable us to do a better job with the live harmonies and, because she is also an accomplished keyboardist, it will enable us to rely less on the pre-recorded backing track live which will now mainly be just for bassline and beat. She is also a vibrant personality and I am confident she will get on really well with Sherin and Elena. So it will be exciting for all these reasons.
