PBG 3 Question Interview with Artist Edie Yvonne - 'Act of Love'

Edie Yvonne returns with her captivating new single, “Act of Love,” a standout from her upcoming EP Look Me in the Eye. The track opens into a raw, reflective space, exploring how fear, projection, and the echoes of past hurt can quietly shape our connections. There’s a sense of emotional honesty woven through every lyric, as Yvonne invites listeners to recognize the patterns that keep us from truly reaching each other. With “Act of Love,” she continues to carve out her signature sound, one that thrives on vulnerability, self-discovery, and the beautifully tangled emotions that define our relationships.

1. “Act of Love” dives into the way fear and projection can quietly build walls between people, even when they care deeply. When you were writing this track, what inspired you to explore how self-protection can sometimes end up hurting the very connections we value most?

EY: It's dramatized but based on my experience in real time. Learning how to be open is a challenge and protecting oneself from getting hurt preemptively can obstruct you from what you really want which is to connect. That is where the song came from. I was thinking about fear when it shows up subtly like overthinking, making assumptions, pulling away, or expecting people to hurt you before they actually do.

My hope is that through the act of writing, fear can be faced and no longer make decisions for us. The song is about the tension between wanting connection and wanting to protect yourself.

“Act of Love” recognized the imperfect process of trying to be open when it’s a risk. Maybe the bravest thing we can do is choose vulnerability over self-protection. I imagine that’s one of the truest acts of love there is.

2. You’ve shared that the track is about how unhealed hurt can keep repeating itself, which is such a powerful thread running through your upcoming EP, Look Me in the Eye. How did creating this new music help you capture the moment of finally turning to face something head-on, rather than letting it linger in the background?

EY: It really is a gift to have a place to put disappointment, betrayal, loss, pain. To get it out of my brain and body I have to put it somewhere and music seems to be that place. I think writing these songs helped me understand things that weren’t clear to me before. A lot of the EP is about recognizing patterns of fear, insecurity, or ways of protecting yourself that eventually stop serving you. “Act of Love” came from realizing that sometimes the things we do to avoid getting hurt can actually create more distance and pain.

Writing the music gave me a chance to really look at truth head on. The title Look Me in the Eye is about honesty—being honest with other people, but also with yourself. It’s about reaching a point where you stop avoiding what’s uncomfortable and decide to face it directly.

The song documents that moment of recognition. For me, healing starts when you’re finally willing to see something clearly and acknowledge it’s there. That’s what this EP is questioning.

3. There’s this bold, pink, almost glowing energy to “Act of Love” that feels so inviting, but underneath, the song is asking some really honest questions about vulnerability and healing. How do you weave together the softness and style of your visual world with the raw emotional truths that live in your music?

EY: I think tension and paradox are present in this song. I wanted the track to feel hopeful and intimate even with the subject of fear and self-sabotage. I think the beauty and messy can live side by side. I want the music to hold both truths at the same time.

I think that paradox is part of who I am. Gallery Dept. has text on a shirt I wear alot - it reads Introvert and then you can turn it inside out and it says Extrovert. I really identify with that. The pop aesthetic and the raw interiority can live side by side.
